The regular meeting of the Ashley County Quorum Court on Tuesday afternoon, July 10, was a very routine one with action taken on only two items.
The justices unanimously approved an ordinance to amend the county’s drug testing policy, as requested by Sheriff David Johnson. The ordinance had previously applied to deputies and others who carried weapons. As changed Tuesday afternoon, the ordinance defines public safety employees as all those people who work at either the county jail or in the law enforcement division of the sheriff’s department. The change means that all employees in each division will be subject to drug tests.
Ashley County Judge Emory Austin announced that he is appointing Dr. Ben Walsh to fill a position on the Ashley County Hospital Board now held by Dr. J. D. Rankin, whose term expires at the end of the month. The justices unanimously affirmed the appointment.
The county judge noted that a committee to study the proposed new cleanup ordinance will meet at 2:30 p. m. this Thursday. Also, due to the illness of Justice Nathaniel “Beby” Reed, Justice Corliss McCain will serve on the committee.
Justice Carl Vorhease announced that the budget committee will meet on August 6 at 9 a.m. to review this year’s budget items and begin work in next year’s budget.
